Today is the last segment of our 5-part series on Nuc purchases. We conclude with a look at how your choice of seller impacts your long-term success.
During this time of the year, large commercial beekeepers offer clubs and associations discounts on bulk purchases (often 100+ nucs). This typically offers a $20 to $50 savings. While wholesalers provide a great product for experienced beekeepers, they generally cannot offer individual support or answer technical questions from hundreds of buyers. These are “as is” purchases.
The retail beekeeper, selling under 500 nucs, offers something invaluable to the beginner: advice and insight. At Nigel Bees Co., we pride ourselves on offering the follow-up support needed to help you be successful. I have even made personal visits to customers to troubleshoot hives—though please note this does incur costs for time and travel!
The Value of Support
Everyone wants a great price, but the price difference between wholesale and retail becomes insignificant the moment a beginner is faced with a hive problem. It is also vital that you purchase from state-licensed retailers and wholesalers to ensure your bees are healthy.
If you are looking to buy in larger quantities (20+ nucs), you should still expect a discount from your retailer for an order of that size.
