Packages are very interesting and I want to take you step-by-step through the process of how they are prepared and what to watch for once you receive yours.
The process starts with manufacturing the plywood package box, featuring two screened sides for maximum airflow. On "Shake Day," bees are shaken from the hive body through a funnel into these boxes, sold in 2lb, 3lb, and 4lb sizes.
A newly mated queen in her own small cage is added, followed by a 16oz can of sugar water for nourishment. Finally, the box is sealed tight for shipping. While efficient, this process carries specific risks.
How to Minimize the Risks
When installing your package, empty the bees into the hive and wait about 20 minutes. Then, lay the queen cage on the top bars and watch the interaction. If they are trying to sting through the screen, they are rejecting her. If they are feeding her, she’s been accepted!
The Reward? A 3lb package with a strong, accepted queen will take off and grow with incredible speed, giving you a powerful start to your season.
